Gemini Side Panel Finally Saves Your History

For power users of Google Workspace, the side panel has become the "command center" for productivity. However, there has been one glaring frustration: every time you closed the panel or refreshed your tab, your conversation with Gemini vanished.

Google is rolling out Conversation History for the Gemini Side Panel across Docs, Drive, Gmail, and Slides. This update brings the side panel experience in line with the standalone Gemini web app, turning the AI from a one-off helper into a continuous collaborator.

What’s Changing? Seamless Continuity

Previously, the Workspace side panel lived in the now. If you asked Gemini to summarize a 50-page document in Google Docs and then switched to Gmail, that summary and the follow-up prompts were gone.

With the new update, you get:

  • Persistent Threads: Your past interactions are now saved and accessible directly within the side panel. You can pick up exactly where you left off, even if you navigate away or close the document.
  • Cross-App Context: Start a research thread in Google Drive and pull those same insights into a Google Doc later. The history follows you across the Workspace ecosystem.
  • Searchable History: Much like the main Gemini app, you can now scroll back through your previous prompts to find that specific table or code snippet the AI generated for you yesterday.

The Efficiency Boost for Business

This isn't just a quality of life tweak; it’s a major shift for professional workflows.

  • Long-term Projects: For writers and researchers, this allows for multi-day drafting sessions where Gemini "remembers" the specific tone or structural requirements you discussed in previous sessions.
  • Drafting & Iteration: In Gmail, you can now refine an email draft over several hours without the AI losing the thread of the conversation.
  • Data Retrieval: No more re-typing complex prompts to get the same data visualization in Slides that you just created in Sheets.

How to Access It

The rollout has begun for all Google Workspace tiers (including Business, Enterprise, and Education) as well as Google One AI Premium subscribers.

  1. Open the Gemini icon (the spark) in the top right of any Workspace app.
  2. Look for the new "History" icon or simply scroll up to see your previous interactions.
  3. Privacy Note: Administrators have the ability to manage history settings for their organization, ensuring that data retention aligns with company policies.

By adding conversation history, Google is removing the ephemeral feeling of the side panel. Gemini is no longer just a chatbot in the margin; it is now a permanent, context-aware member of your creative team.

The era of 'starting over' is over. With conversation history finally landing in the side panel, Gemini is ready to work as long and as hard as you do.
