New AI Features in Docs, Sheets & Drive
On March 10, 2026, Google announced a massive wave of updates to Google Workspace, fundamentally reimagining content creation by moving Gemini from a side-panel assistant to the core of the workflow in Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive.
These features are currently rolling out in Beta for Gemini Alpha business customers and Google AI Pro & Ultra subscribers.
1. Google Docs: From Blank Page to Structured Drafts
Google is introducing a new bottom bar that allows you to describe a document in plain language.
- Unified Data Drafting: Gemini can now pull information directly from your Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Chat to draft content. For example, you can ask it to "draft a neighborhood newsletter using the meeting minutes from my January HOA meeting."
- Match Writing Style: This tool unifies the tone across a document, ensuring a consistent voice regardless of who contributed.
- Match Doc Format: You can point Gemini at a reference document (like a specific travel itinerary template), and it will structure your new content to match that specific layout.
2. Google Sheets: The "Spreadsheet Expert" Update
Google reports that Gemini in Sheets has reached a state-of-the-art benchmark (70.48% on SpreadsheetBench), nearing human expert ability.
- Natural Language Building: You can describe an entire spreadsheet goal (e.g., "Organize my upcoming move with a checklist for each room and a contact list for utilities from my inbox"), and Gemini will build the multi-step structure, synthesising data from your files and emails.
- Fill with Gemini: A new feature that populates columns using real-time info from Google Search. If you list college names, Gemini can automatically fill in their deadlines and tuition fees.
- Advanced Problem Solving: Powered by DeepMind’s OR-Tools, Gemini can now solve complex optimization problems (like logistics or budgeting) via simple natural language prompts in the side panel.
3. Google Slides: Automated Layouts & Coming Soon
- Contextual Slide Creation: When creating a new slide, Gemini automatically crafts messaging and layouts that match the visual weight and hierarchy of your existing deck.
- Full Deck Generation (Preview): Google announced that users will "soon" be able to generate entire presentations from scratch using only a description. This feature will leverage company-specific Workspace data to ensure the deck is on-brand.
4. Google Drive: Transforming into a "Knowledge Base"
Google is shifting Drive from a "passive storage container" to an "active knowledge base."
- AI Overviews in Search: Much like Google Search, semantic queries in Drive will now surface a cited summary at the top of your results, allowing you to find answers without opening a single file.
- Ask Gemini in Drive: You can select a group of files and ask complex questions across them. For example, you could select all tax-related PDFs and ask, "What are the three most important things I should discuss with my advisor?"
Availability & Rollout
- Language: Initially available in English globally for Docs, Sheets, and Slides.
- Regions: Drive features are starting in the U.S. first.
- Access: Available via Google AI Pro/Ultra plans and Gemini Alpha for business users.
Let’s be honest: we’ve all spent too much time hunting for that one PDF in a cluttered Drive or wrestling with complex Sheet formulas. This latest wave of updates feels like Google finally heard our collective sigh of frustration. Gemini in Workspace is no longer just a 'cool feature' it’s the teammate that actually reads all the meeting minutes and remembers where the tax forms are. Work in 2026 just got a lot less tedious, and honestly? We’re here for it.
